SUICIDE / IDEATION RESPONSE
Members faced with an individual acting suicidal or expressing thoughts of self-harm should contact The Big 3 (IDMT, Chaplain and First Shirt).
The Shirt will likely instruct the member immediately what to do/not do. In coordination with the First Sgts instructions, the member should utilize ACE.
ACE
Ask - bluntly if the member is thinking about suicide.
Care - provide compassion to the member and express genuine empathy.
Escort - help to get the member TO the care they need i.e. IDMTs, Chaplain, Shirt.

CDOC:
Capabilities
• Immediate emergency response (on base)

Constraints
• No jurisdiction off base
FIRST SGT:
Capabilities
• 24/7 access and response
• Advise members on resources and plan going forward
IDMT:
Capabilities
• Crisis response/initial assessment (walk-in or appointment)
• Referrals
• Emergency room
• Inpatient mental health (voluntary)
• Local mental health providers
• Medical evacuation to Landstuhl
• Commanders can make Command Directed Evaluations (CDE)
Constraints
• US Military Mental Health Providers not available at Lajes Airfield
• 72 hour hold not available (member must be willing)
• Med-evac may take up to 4 days
• Member may be released back to duty and need continued care
• Local mental health care has some cultural/language barriers
CHAPLAIN:
Capabilities
• Pastoral counsel & crisis intervention
• 100% Confidential & Privileged (AFI 52-101, chapter 5)
• No exceptions
• Cannot be disclosed without informed consent of member
• Available for military & authorized dependents (civilian employees as mission permits)
Constraints
• Not qualified mental health providers
• Not a mandatory reporter
• Not for long-term therapy

• Referrals to support through other resources (victim must elect to receive support/care)

• Duty to warn for imminent harm to self or others (suicide, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect)

MILITARY & FAMILY LIFE COUNSELOR (MFLC)
Capabilities
• Licensed Professional Counselor
• 12 sessions per person/per issue (no documentation)
• Can counsel military and their dependents (work with children must be with open door or window in door)
• Can counsel in alternate public location
Constraints
• Duty to warn for imminent harm to self or others (suicide, sexual assault, illegal drug usage, domestic violence, child abuse/neglect)
• Cannot counsel those under care of other therapist or mental health provider or civilians
• Cannot counsel in the individual's home
